Obituary of Norma Gomez

Norma Gomez passed away peacefully on Sunday March 3, just one week after her 87^th birthday.
The matriarch of the family, part of close-knit extended family network, she was a devoted daughter, loyal mother, committed wife, loving grandmother and great grandmother, faithful sister, warm cousin, aunt and friend who will be deeply missed.

Norma was born on Feb 25, 1937 in New York City, daughter to Josephine and Julio Gomez, where she spent her formative years with her siblings, and lived with her beloved grandfather Alejandro.

A spirited woman unwilling to let society’s constructions hold her down, she carved a path to create her own exceptional life. Throughout her career as a multifamily property owner, she was known for her hard work, dedication, and passion for taking care of "the houses” in the Bronx. Self-reliant, resourceful and always “handy,” she wanted to fix things and make improvements, continuously eager to do it herself, using what resources she had on hand.

Her love of repairing belongings extended to offer guidance to her family in their own original projects. She encouraged each family members talents and unique qualities, wanted to see them succeed as they followed their ideas and dreams.

She had the expressive soul of an artist, and she tapped her creative talents to express herself over the years through a range of leisurely yet productive pastimes creating stained glass suncatchers, moody oil paintings, decoratively painted lawn ornaments, and inventive sewing projects, often in her favorite color purple. Never afraid to get dirty, she had a green thumb and loved spending time in the garden, digging, planting, and enjoying the quiet. 

 

With eyes always open on the street or at flea markets, she was an avid treasure hunter, always finding amazing antiques, distributing refurbished household elements and furniture to family or extending her brass collection.

She loved watching movies, either at home or at the theater, as she appreciated a stirring drama and a haunting mystery. Sitting with family to watch a film, playing board games with her grandchildren or sitting with her four-legged friends with a cup of Sanka coffee, she found the little moments of joy within each day.

Although a rule breaker, she loved making traditional comfort foods and treasured being with her family and hosting family gatherings at her home in Queens or Brentwood, NY to celebrate any special day or holiday.

She leaves behind an abundance of stories and lessons... and many strong women to carry on her legacy.
