To the family of "Dee" Thompson it is with sincere sadness that I extend my condolences to you. I worked with Sister Thompson in the Lay Dept of the AME church and Christian Ed, and enjoyed every moment of it and her. We had many laughs and always looked forward to praising and worshipping God together. She was a icon in the New York Lay Conference and an inspiration to many for her dedication inspiration servanthood. She will be greatly missed but her work down here is done and now the crown prepared for work well down is hers to receive. We loved her dearly but God loved her most. The Huntington community lost a true giant and I lost a dear friend and mentor with the passing of Dolores "Dee" Thompson. I have known--and been in awe of--Dee for nearly forty years. She has spoken at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Huntington many times and is perhaps the main reason we have had a decades-long congregational connection with Huntington Bethel AME Church. I know her daughter, Tracey Edwards, former Town Council member and member of the Huntington Anti-Bias Task Force, and currently LI Regional Director of the NAACP, and her grandson Walter. Dee was one of my earliest mentors in the Huntington community. She would say, "I KNOW I can count on you to show up," it wasn't a compliment; it was a command. She always knew I could do more: "who else can you tell about this?" "I need you to bring three friends." When Dee asked, people showed up. There are very few people whose friendship has led to multigenerational friendships in my life. I will miss her like family. I will miss hugging her. I'm grateful for my ongoing connection to the Edwards family and the Bethel AME Church.
