Stuart Sherman Royce Obituary
Stuart Sherman Royce passed away on December 9, 2020 in Huntington, NY at the age of 98. He was the beloved husband of the late Anne Royce (nee Pascuzzi) and devoted father to Kathleen (James), David (Jeanette) and Barbara. In addition to his children, Stuart is survived by his grandchildren Marianne, Jonathan, Philip, Anne and John.
Stuart earned his undergraduate degree in biology and physics at Hobart & Williams College. After service in the Army during World War II he was awarded a Master’s degree from Albany State Teachers’ College, where he and Anne met. They began their lives and long careers in education together in North Creek, NY and subsequently moved to Greenlawn, NY where Stuart built his family home, raised his family and continued to live for the balance of his days. After several years working at Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp., he returned to education as guidance counselor and later chair of the guidance department at Hicksville Junior High School until his retirement in 1984.
Working with his hands, especially carpentry and wood working, was one of Stuart’s passions. Many of his skills were self-taught and there was never a project he wouldn’t tackle whether at his own home or the homes of his children. Anne and Stuart enjoyed traveling together, including numerous “Elder Hostel” trips throughout the United States and Canada. Stuart was an avid reader and an accomplished musician. He volunteered with the Huntington Manor Fire Department Band and continued to enjoy music, particularly from the Big Band Era, for many years.
A kind, generous man with an unfailing sense of humor, Stuart touched many lives and all who knew him were better for it.
Stuart will repose at M.A. Connell Funeral Home in Huntington N.Y where the family will hold a private service followed by internment at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Memorial Mass will be held at a future date when we can all be together. Those wishing to make a donation in Stuart’s memory are invited to contribute to St. Labre Indian School: stlabre.org.
