Obituary of Anne Sanschagrin
Please share a memory of Anne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Anne Sanschagrin (nee Sweeten) of Huntington Station passed away peacefully on November 19 after a prolonged illness. She was 96 years old.
Beloved wife of the late Dennis, and cherished mother of daughters Denise Kancler, Suzanne Sanschagrin, Annette Petrone (Tony), and Amy Kelly (Jim); and grandchildren Kiera and Matthew Kancler (Valerie), Kate Petrone, James and Bronwyn Kelly; and Great Grandson Christopher Kancler.
Born in Hell’s Kitchen in 1922, her family later moved to the Bronx and then Woodside, Queens. Enrolling in the Secretarial program in high school led to her career as a Legal Secretary, working many years for Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Robert Doyle prior to retiring in 1993.
Anne met Dennis at the Savrin Bar in Penn Station while he was waiting for his train to take him to his next assignment in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After bidding goodbye to make his train, he and his Navy comrade picked up their ditty bags and exited through the revolving door only to revolve back in and ask for her address to correspond during his travels. Married in 1946, they settled in Great Neck and then bought a house in Huntington Station in 1954. They were active in the Holy Name and Rosary Societies at St. Hugh of Lincoln Church and valued Catholic educations for their four girls. Anne was a wonderful cook, loved opera, Broadway musicals, and traveling, but most of all welcoming family and friends to her home.
Visitation will be at M.A. Connell Funeral Home on Sunday, November 25 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral mass will be at St. Patrick’s Church in Huntington on Monday, November 26 at 10:45am.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Anne’s memory may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
