I'm so sorry for the great loss of your dear John. Words cannot express the pain we feel when we lose those we love. Please take comfort in knowing that our creator, Jehovah God, has promised to end death forever and to reunite us with our loved ones (Rev. 21:4 and John 5:28, 29). Be comforted by the good memories and allow your family and friends to help you through this difficult time. Remember, it is impossible for God to lie (Heb. 6:18), what he has promised will happen soon.

In my mind's eye, I can still see John walking the halls of Bushwick High School, where our paths crossed for the first time more than 60 years ago. He was, in the term used in that day, a "character" whose Brooklyn accent was unmistakable, and it never changed during his life. After graduation, this "character" grew, forged on the anvil of his beloved Marine Corps, and what emerged was a delightful man, helpful to others, and dedicated to his family. He was also the prime mover in organizing the three reunions of graduating Class of 1954, the first of which I came from Spain to attend. Although Vic (Chimera) and I helped, it was John who always did the heavy lifting. I shall miss him for he is, in my imagination, forever walking with his small loose leaf binder tucked under this arm, and greeting those who also came to very much admire this marvelous man.

Both VINCENT & I ASSISTED JOHN IN PUTTING OUR 60th YR. HIGH SCHOOL REUNION together. I GUESS that will be our FINAL REUNION.
His dedication to the US MARINES, HIS LOVE FOR HIS COUNTRY and helping people in the GENEALOGY FIELD IS UNSURPASSED. I will MISS HIM & I SALUTE HIM...AMEN

I first met John at the National Archives close to twenty years ago. He helped many people piece together their family history. He would immediately drop what he was doing to help navigate through the indexes and microfilm. Many people would have found the research too intimidating and would have quit. The world is a greater place because of John.......

I started doing genealogy in 1993 in Plainview . My research literally took off when I discovered the IGG. Over time I came to see how influential John was and I eventually met him on a trip to the Archives. Like many others here have said, John stopped what he was doing and sat down and we talked. We found out that we came from the same neighborhood in Brooklyn, we both served as Marines, and we both had an enthusiasm for genealogy. What a surprise - John had signed me up to be an indexing volunteer before we parted that day. That work has continued because I felt privileged to give back.
I can only imagine how many lives will eventually be touched through that indexing work that he was so focused about.
And I can only imagine how many lives he touched in person because of the man he was.
My condolences to the family.

Dear Mrs. Martino and family,
There is no way we can feel the loss that is yours. We can only send our love and blessings and our prayers to assist in our small way to give you the comfort that is yours right now.
John was loved by us all here at IGG and we are sure many more whose lives he touched. His return home to the Father is in some ways a gift that has been given him so that he may now enjoy the rewards he worked so hard to attain. As a volunteer to help in some small way, it was my pleasure to work with him and we know he appreciated whatever any one of us did to make his work worthwhile and lessen the burden of how much he wished to accomplish. It was indeed our pleasure to have known him. Our prayers always, Ann and Frank

I had the unique privilege of meeting John through my wonderful sister Maryann Horn. At the time I was an active duty Sergeant USMC and I was called up to my Commanding Officers office. Unbeknownst to me there was a letter addressed to me from General Labutti. When asked why I was receiving a personal congratulatory letter on my promotion from a 3 star active duty Marine General I was a little confused. After leaving the office it dawned on me my sister had a Marine friend who was very popular in Long Island as a huge Marine Corps supporter. This is how I became to meet and befriend John. John has done so much to support Marines both active and retired. Thank you Marine. Semper Fidelis.

Once in a great while, an individual comes along with a strong passion to better the lives of others. Unfortunately, such a person does not come often enough. John's passion for genealogy and the work he did to help future genealogists and family historians is the stuff of legend. On top of everything else, he was a truly nice person, with a great sense of humor and a strong discipline he could only have learned in the Marines. So very few people are irreplaceable, but John was truly one of a kind. He will be missed sorely in the future, but the legacy he leaves behind is truly inspiring. Thank you, John, for everything. Thank you, Martino family, for sharing such a wonderful human being with all of us. My condolences to all who mourn for him. In our culture, one of the highest tributes you can give to a person is to say he was a mensch. It now seems such an inadequate word to describe John and his contributions. Rest in peace, my friend. Prior to my Mom and Dad's 50th Wedding Anniversary, I had discovered my father was adopted. I began a search to find my biological paternal grandparents back in early 1994. My search started in the research room of the Church of the Latter Day Saints in Plainview, New York, this is where I met John Martino. John took the time to show me how to research the microfilm and records in the family library, and ultimately discover my father's surname 'Cianchetta' (so we thought). John introduced me to the Italian Genealogical Group, of which I became a member. Though I haven't seen John in over 15 years, or more, I will always remember how he helped me, guided me, and lent me his support in tracing my family roots. Subject: John Martino - sad news
From: Renee Steinig <genmaven@gmail.com>
Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2015 15:53:36 -0500
X-Message-Number: 6
With great sadness, we share news of the death of a genealogy hero --
John Martino. John, the dynamic Long Island retiree who conceived and
implemented numerous massive volunteer indexing projects, passed away
on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015. He was 79.
As Vice President for Special Projects of Long Island's Italian
Genealogical Group (http://italiangen.org), John was a major force
behind years of work to make over 16 million vital records and
naturalizations for New York City and vicinity available free online.
Many Jewish genealogists from Long Island and beyond were in the army
of volunteers that John recruited and coordinated, and countless more
were among the NYC researchers worldwide who benefited from easy
access to the records.
Recognizing the importance of the indexing projects to Jewish
genealogists with roots in New York, the International Association of
Jewish Genealogical Societies awarded its 2008 Rabbi Malcolm Stern
Grant (http://www.iajgs.org/blog/awards/rabbi-malcolm-stern-grant/) to
help fund the creation of the first ever Brooklyn Brides Index. John
was also recognized at the 2006 International Conference on Jewish
Genealogy in New York, where the Jewish Genealogical Society (NY)
presented him with a plaque honoring his achievements
(http://www.jgsny.org/files/dorot/fall2006.pdf). John attended many
JGSLI meetings -- sometimes as our speaker, sometimes in the audience,
and more than once, he'd point out, on Easter Sunday. He often
acknowledged the Jewish genealogical community's support of the
indexing projects.
John was again honored in May 2014, when he -- along with Don Eckerle
and Bob Boeckle of the German Genealogy Group, IGG's partner in the
indexing projects -- received the National Genealogical Society's
Award of Merit (http://tinyurl.com/JMUpfront) in recognition of their
"exceptional contributions to the field of genealogy."
John once wrote, "We have done a lot and we have changed genealogy
here in New York." Indeed he did... and we will be forever grateful
for his dedication and his friendship.
John's wake will be held at the M. A. Connell Funeral Home, 934 New
York Ave, Huntington Station, NY (631-427-1123), from 2:00 to 4:00
p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5 and 6. A
funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at St. Francis
of Assisi Church, 29 Northgate Drive, Greenlawn, NY. A proud veteran
of the United States Marine Corps, John will be buried with full
military honors at Calverton National Cemetery.
Condolences may be left at the funeral home's website --

My condolences to the Martino family on John's passing.
He was a giant within the genealogical community and an inspiration to all of us of how much one person with determination can accomplish. His death will leave a void that will be difficult to fill.

John provided a tremendous service to the genealogical community. Although we never met John personally, we did data entry for a number of years. He will be missed.
