I am one of the many Commack Teachers who had the distinct pleasure of being interviewed by Joe when I was hired. He always treated the employees of the Commack Schools with dignity, compassion and his exceptional sense of humor. The late 1970’s was the start of the difficult years. Commack had grown at a record rate and then unfortunately declined at a record rate. Many employees faced “excessing.” Joe was there advocating for re-certification to keep as many people employed as possible. I was one of them. I will always remember Joe fondly.

I had the privilege of having your dad/brother as my Social Studies teacher in Commack. He was a wonderful man as well as a great teacher. He instilled so many great ethics in me and his other students. I posted his passing on a FB site called Commack in the 60's and 70's. If you're able to view it, please read the wonderful messages that his students had. And yes, I did see him at an Elvis concert once!!! May he rest in peace. Such a wonderful man.

Joe always had the ability to separate the message from the messenger, thus causing little stress among the staff of the Commack Public Schools. Negotiating contracts or disputes with Joe was always made easier because of his demeanor. Joe was one of a kind who will be greatly missed by those who served with him, either in administration or the teachers association.

Dear family and friends of Joey Heinlein;
This week has been a very hard week for the former residents of "East Ninth Street"! We have lost three GREAT GUYS - Vinny Vaughn; Pete Heintz; and now Joey!
We pray that these three former neighbors and comrades are now enjoying one another's company in the Great Beyond!
You are all very fondly remembered and are missed!
Jimmy Vaughn
