Obituary of Bernard James Musso
Please share a memory of Bernard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bernard (Bernie), a resident of Huntington since 1960, was born in Brooklyn in 1935. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy in Manhattan and received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Physics from the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. He started his career in the defense industry at Sperry Gyroscope, moving to Eaton AIL and then Hazeltine, where he focused his talents on radar technology. He was a member of the Huntington Yacht Club and served on its Board of Trustees. He volunteered at Huntington Hospital for many years and was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Huntington. On election days, he was a poll worker at the Laurel Avenue School in Northport.
He was married to Ann Scolnick for 34 years. He had two daughters from his previous marriage, Lynn Manning and Jean Steck, and three granddaughters and two grandsons.
Although a man of science, he was an artist. He sculpted from clay, stone, and copper. He was commissioned to create several works for local residents. His creative side extended to writing short stories he shared as part of several of writers' groups and to photography, a talent he shared with Ann. Bernie and Ann took many road trips to different parts of the United States, photographing its people and scenery.
His passion was boating. Bernie spent years in and around the coves, harbors, and waters of Long Island Sound. For the past 12 years, he and Ann enjoyed weeks each summer at the Chipman Point Marina on Lake Champlain in Vermont.
Conversations with his grandchildren were one of Bernie's greatest joys. He explored with them the worlds of science, politics, and health and his philosophy of life. They recall his brilliance and his unique sense of humor, and all will miss him dearly.
