John Joseph Martin Jr. age 81, of Tierra Verde Florida and Madison, Conn. Passed away July 29, 2013 in his wife's arms, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born September 3, 1931 in Floral Park, NY to Mary and John Joseph Martin Sr. He grew up in Bayside Queens, NY where he attended Sacred Heart elementary school, and graduated from Power Memorial High School. After High School, he enlisted in the navy and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged.
Raising his family in Westbury NY and becoming active in the community, his commitment to public service continued. As a life long volunteer ,he was awarded "citizen of the Year" by the Carle Place Civic association. He was elected to and served on the Carle Place School District's board for over 10 years -- most of those years as its president.
He proudly served as a New York City Police Officer for 29 years, retiring July 3, 1985. Included in his tenure; as a Lieutenant- he supervised Shea Stadium; as Captain he was the commanding officer of the court division, pre-arraignment at police plaza 1; as Deputy Inspector he was commanding officer of midtown South, which at that time was the busiest preceinct in the world. He retired as a full Inspector, commanding officer of zone 5. He continued his proud service and love for police work serving as Police Commissioner of Lloyd Harbor, New York from 1985-1995.
In his retirement years, he was fortunate to share time between Tierra Verde, FL and Madison, CT, where he cherished his family and his Catholic faith above all else.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Jane, his daughters Elizabeth Martin-Tienharra(Richard), Jennifer Martin-Donovan(Michael), Diane Malichio(Joseph), and Maura Niles(Michael). Proud Grandfather of Morgan, Justin and Graham; Connor and Jane; Alexandra John, Maura and Joseph; Burke, William, Charles and James.
He is also survived by his sister, Catherine Barrett; as well as many adoring nieces and nephews.
He was a man of faith. He was a man of his word. He was a good man.
