It was with great sadness that I learned this week that Doug had passed away. Although I grew up with Doug I haven't seen him in decades. The Brown family was very kind to my family when we moved to Old Black Point. My father raced often with the Brown crew and always came back with a story and a smile. I know Doug was responsible for both. My deepest condolences to his family.

To Doug's family: I read of Doug's passing in the Brown Alumni Monthly and wanted to say that I am very sorry for your loss. I knew Doug at Brown and one of my fondest memories was meeting him Freshman week - he was one of the first people I met. I asked him his name and he made me guess his last name - I was not as quick as he and didn't get the joke right away - but soon realized the irony when he revealed his last name. I will always remember Doug. He was a very happy person always with a smile. My sincerest sympathies for your loss.

Doug your gentle kindness will be missed at PEA and, quite apparently, everywhere else you went after that. Bless you and yours.

Although I didn't know Doug well - or really at all - in person, I thought it might be touching for those who did know him better to hear about how Doug kept my spirits up when we were both students at Exeter. Doug decided that we had a bond that was worth acting on - my middle name is Brown and Doug decided to adopt me as "family" of sorts -- "cousin Brown." He started up a PO Box correspondence that went on through parts of our whole first year at Exeter. It was a treat to be able to go down to the imposing Post Office building after assembly and be able to pull mail out of my PO Box on so many days when I would otherwise have been left empty handed. We were "pen pals" at a time when having a playful friend like this really counted! What a gift that was. I regret I never really got to know Doug in person, but I always felt grateful for his hand scrawled, pretty random "Brown-cousin" notes.

As I look back, it's startling to realize how short a time it was, that I actually knew Doug. But as Robert Frost said about happiness, his friendship and comradery made up in height what it lacked in length.
Bigger than life, for sure; funny, intelligent, no-nonsense... did I mention funny?
Even as a young man with little to lose, I noted with admiration the gentle but sure shift in his sense of responsibility when his first child was born. Doug had a keen sense of perspective and respect, which is about as much as any of us can hope for.
Peace to him, and strength to his family.

Doug was a great friend: loyal, witty, smart and engaging like no one else. He introduced me to sailing as well as to his wonderful family. Though he will be greatly missed, he made our lives bigger by his very presence.
